The Actuaries Climate Index (ACI) has been updated with data through August 2023. The ACI provides objective measures of specific and aggregate changes in climate extremes and sea level across Canada and the U.S. and is based on an analysis of seasonal data from neutral, scientific sources for six index components collected since 1961. The five-year average has decreased slightly from the previous season, now sitting at 1.15 relative to an average of zero during the 1961-1990 reference period. This release includes updated data for consecutive dry days for 2023, which is the primary driver of the slight decrease.

The five-year average has decreased slightly from the previous season, now sitting at 1.17 relative to an average of zero during the 1961-1990 reference period. This decrease was driven by small downward shifts in the 5-year moving average of the ACI’s temperature and wind speed metrics.

The five-year average has increased slightly from the previous season, now sitting at 1.19 relative to an average of zero during the 1961-1990 reference period.

This update includes new data for the fall of 2022, as well as small retrospective adjustments to the data for summer of 2022. Small adjustments to recent data are a normal feature of the raw data that feeds into the ACI. As a result of the retrospective adjustments, the five-year ACI average for summer 2022 shifted from 1.19 to 1.16. The new data for fall of 2022 did not impact the value of the five-year average, leaving it unchanged at 1.16.

The five-year average now sits at 1.19 relative to an average of zero during the 1961–1990 reference period. In addition to data for fall of 2021, this update reflects new sea level data for spring and summer of 2021, replacing data that had previously been imputed due to reporting lags.

High Temperatures in Northwest and Southwest Pacific Region Drive Index Value Higher
Washington, D.C., Arlington, VA, Schaumburg, IL, and Ottawa, ON (June 28, 2017) –Organizations representing the actuarial profession in Canada and the United States today updated the Actuaries Climate Index™, an objective, quarterly measure of changes in extreme weather frequency and sea level. The Actuaries Climate Index value for fall 2016 was 2.07, the highest seasonal level recorded for the United States and Canada combined. The current five-year moving average is 1.07, the highest level recorded for that measure. The index is available online at ActuariesClimateIndex.org.
